On a selfish level, you smoking in the apartment costs FSP Realty money. This is because smoking leaves a yellow tinge on the walls. This is nicotine and tar you are espelling from your breath. When you leave the residence, FSP Realty has to move anything out of your unit, and clean the walls of this yellow tinge. After that, the walls might have to be repainted which costs even more money. And if the nicotine and tar on the ceiling, there is even more money. After the washing and painting, any items has to be moved back in before a new tenant can come in. In apartments, there is still a need to wash the walls, and repaint.
With that said, I am also sure there will be some people that won’t want to live next to someone that smokes inside. They will smell that smoke, and find it unpleasant to say the least. This will cause them to start looking for another apartment close to the time their lease expires. FSP Realty is now losing tenants because of in building smokers. This is no a lost of revenue, and you are not hurting the income genreated by the unit. If it becomes too expensive to provide apartments for low income households, I will likely just sell, and live off the winnings of the sale. You would then have to deal with a landlord where you are just a number, and not a person.
