FSP Realty has SRO?s which are available to anyone wanting or needing a single room where they can sleep. Since SROs are a single room, and the couch will fold out to become a bed, you can imagine the tight living quarters. I don’t imagine that most people will be looking forward to living in an SRO, but some might. Here is the thing, if an SRO is too expensive, it doesn’t matter how much it costs. My rent for all of my SROs will be $750. If you are like me, and on SSI – then that means I have about $250 left for everything else. This will take choices I have away from me while I try to turn pennies into dollars. It would be either an SRO or the streets. Even a shared room in a house might likely cost a little more.
All of my SROs will have a ¾ bathroom, and a room that they can call their own. The couch folds out into a bed after moving a very light coffee table next to the window. There will be a corner desk, and the tenant will have to provide their own router to get on the internet. This shows how simple the unit will be. There is a dormitory refrigerator, and a Roku TV, but not much beyond that. You can learn more in the SROs page of this site.
A low income (below $1,950) person without anyone else that would be living with them will be able to apply for a subsidized SRO. This will hopefully be a sufficient stop gap measure while waiting for better benefits. The applicant will bring a number of documents to apply for a subsidized SRO. These documents are as follows:
- Proof of Applications to other programs
- Proof of income
- 6 Months of Bank Statements
- Photo ID card
Proof of Applications
You must apply for Section-8, and subsidized housing with supporting apartments (FSP Realty an option). This proof must be annually, and assure that the tenant is trying to get subsidized housing. If the tenant applied for subsidized housing with FSP Realty, they will be able to receive an email with the document attached as a .pdf file. This is imperative as subsidized SROs is to be a temporary solution to keep you off the streets while waiting for something to come through.
Proof of Income
You must provide proof of income. If you are disabled, this could be Social Security papers, and if you are working, you should be able to get proof of income from HR of your work place. Since this is for a single person only, you can not earn more than $1,950 (2026) per month for income. This is because the program is only for those receiving 150% of poverty or lower. Your income will determine what you would pay. To know ahead of time, expect 35% of your income as your rent.
6 Months of Bank Statements
6 months of bank statements are required. This is to verify that you have no other traceable income that you aren’t disclosing. You must have some income, but the statements are intended to provide financial resources.
Photo ID Card
This program is for legal aliens, or citizens. This site is not a dispute of who should be a legal alien. That is above my pay grade, but only legal aliens should have this housing program. If someone came here for a better life and have to apply for assistance for a sleeping room, they may want to rethink if they really have a better life.
Once Approved
Once approved, the tenant will use their smartphone as a digital key, and will be provided with their address. Once they are in their SRO, they will see a manual for the apartment. This manual will tell everything they need to know about the residence. It will also provide for contact information for getting a hold of apartment management.
Their rent will be 35% of their income. Therefore, someone living on SSI will likely have to pay $350 per month for rent. My rent for a 1B apartment is less than that, so receiving subsidized housing is a much better solution than relying on this program. That is done with purpose. The idea is to encourage the tenant for wanting more and better. Even a studio apartment will give more living space, and have a full kitchen.
